At the time, it was a gallery designated lor all the visual arts, and I recall being delighted with (he hanging space and the quality of light flooding into the gallery A few years later. I participated in a second show there, and then very shortly afterward, the mandate of the gallery changed to photo-based art. I wish particularly lo honour their ability to portray the cosmic dance of life in its sensual and spiritual aspects. The figures on the canvases portray a heightened awareness of their own beauty and sensuality as metaphors of the beauty and sensuality of all life. They suggest that in the union of the polarized beings a spiritual awakening takes place which results in the birth of the God Man and the God Woman. My figures emerge from the textured and hunushed surfaces of the canvases like the old temple carvings come to life. As well as the works on canvas, there are abstract works on paper describing the inner aspect of a spiritual search. I developed this theme in my work during a month-long retreat in the Okanagan. My exercise was to face a blank piece of paper each day with an empty mind and no concepts, ideas or reference (o the outside world. The resulting rush of paintings pushed me into another aspcel of myself as artist, and this body of work is a resull of about their business. Some may beckon to me to share a peaceful moment with them; others paticnth enjoy the challenge they have offered me to capture their essence. The form of a rock, its texture, its strength, its peacefulness, its relation to its buddies, its character; all these qualities draw me. I walk about, often in the Lynn Valley park system, and also on trips; my old. manual 35mm camera with me and good rockhopping sneakers on my feet, looking, relaxing, and soon, some rock, or a large rock surface, or a cluster of rocks catches my eye.
