front Going Public with Art Getting art out into the public has always been a concern of artists and arts programmers. The North Shore Arts Commission is in the process of articulating a Public Art Policy which should facilitate this aim. A set of interim guidelines was recently submitted to the three municipalities; feedback on the draft document is expected sometime this fall, and a formal policy will likely be adopted i the ri Despite all the discussion, many people are unfamiliar with the term 'public art.' This issue's feature story, "So What Is Public An, Anyway?," provides an introduction, as well as some North Shore examples. And it just so happens that the theme of this year's Artropolis exhibit {opening in late October) is Public Art & Art about Public Issues. These are open to the general public at minimal cost. Television Production Jolynn Sommervill, producer of Arts Access TV. and Sergio Contreras, program coordinator/producer at Shaw Cable, will be offering an expanded version of their television production workshop on September 27th & 29th. from 7-9 pm. Geared to people with little or no knowledge of television/video production, as well as more experienced individuals who want to hone their skills, it will cover the following areas: producing, scripting, camera work, lighting and editing. Jolynn has worked in the film & television industry for a number of years as a second assistant director on such programs as Street Legal, Kids in the Hali and. most recently, Madison. Sergio, originally from Chile, has worked for Shaw for fifteen years. Sergio and Jolynn gave a workshop together in the spring, and because we had to turn people away, we have decided to The workshop will be held in two parts, with the first evening being devoted to general concepts such as scripting and story boarding. The second session will deal with the more technical aspects of television production. If enough participants are interested, they can go off and produce a segment, and then come back for a subsequent feedback session. The workshop fee is S30. To register, phone 984-9537. Basics of Graphic Design This workshop will introduce the basics of graphic design and production, keeping in mind that artists' promotional budgets are limited. Workshop participants will no longer be dumbfounded by the terms 'camera-ready artwork,' 'offset printing process,' or 'PMT,' as instructor Ron Woodward walks them through the steps involved in designing a particular document, cost-estimating it, and getting it printed. Specific topics covered in the four-hour workshop are: layout and design; the fundamentals of typography; formats and grids; using photographs and illustrations effectively; printing processes; finding and working with a printer Gnrp/uaJ» will be placed on mokinj coti-cftcciivc design choices. Ron has been working and teaching in the graphic arts field for 20 years. He recently returned from the Banff Centre for the Arts, where he was a guest instructor ir Publishing Workshop.
