you GORDON FINLAY MYSTICAL MUSINGS Artists Meet Under the Volcano by Irwin Oastindie A diverse blend of cultures from around the world will be featured at the fourth annual Under the Volcano Festival. The free community arts festival takes place in the 55-acre Cates Park in North Vancouver, August 7-8. The tentative lineup includes the Soweto Teachers Choir (from South Africa), the Plovdov Women's Choir (from Bulgaria), and folk musicians from Guatemala, the L i l ' W a t Nation and the West Coast of the U.S. In addition to the musicians on the mainstage, there will be art installations in the forested areas of the park, participatory art stations, a children's programming area (featuring a huge inflated volcano by Evelyn Roth), plus forum theatre, workshops, speakers and organic foods. More than 4000 people are expected to attend this year's festival, with a large proportion being 15- to 24-year-olds. Local artists will be joined by international artists, and various media will be featured, including performance, drama, music and the visual arts. If you are a practising visual artist and would like to have your work shown to the public in this outdoor festival environment, opportunities exist for both displaying and creating site-specific installations. More than 120 artists will be involved in this diverse cultural event, with more than 80 volunteer^ contributing to us success. They are also introduced to The Bard by participating in scenes from The Taming of the Shrew and later watching a Shakespearean play performed by the professional acting company, The Bard on the Beach. There will be an opportunity for students to meet with the company's artistic director, Christopher Gaze. Theatre for Teens runs August 9-21 for 13-15-yearolds. Programs are B magical blend of drama, art and movement, offering lots o f opportunities for experimenting with new ideas, making new friends and having fun. The atmosphere is stimulating inside, where inspired teachers share their love and knowledge of the visual and performing arts, and scenic and peaceful on the outside, where the Capilano River flows by and the mountains glisten in the distance. Dramaworks staff like to think that the spirit of Emily Carr is also part of Klee Wyck, encouraging and helping young artists with their work in a place she loved, both for its natural scenic beauty and for the friends who used to live there. 'Creative Drama' is designed to reveal the fascinating relationship between line art and drama a two-week arts adventure.
