"Adam and Eve" won an award last year at an international art competition in Southern France. Some of you might ha' [he painting at the Ferry Building in early April. Although Susanna is best known as a portrait artist (she was recently commissioned to paint the Count and Countess Dobrzensky in Vienna and the Prince and Princess Drutzkoy-Sokolinsky in Brussels), her most recent work-- including "Adam and Eve"--has been inspired by her travels in Europe last year. I hope to feature the work of more visual artists on the cover of Arts Access. Interested artists are welcome to submit photos (preferably black and white) of their work. The Deep Cove & Area Heritage Association will be showing selections from its extensive collection of 700 historical photographs. The shows are at 2 p.m. on the second Sunday of the month in May, June, July and September at the Deep Cove Cultural Centre, 4360 Gallant Avenue. Admission is free. The first show, on May 9th, will present an overview of the area east of the Seymour River, tracing the development of the area. It includes slides of Wigwam Inn, Woodlands, the Deep Cove area and Dollarton. The June 13th show takes the theme of 'Travelling the North Arm." It focusses on life on the water in and around the Deep Cove area and includes pictures of regattas in Deep Cove and Woodlands, Burrard Band canoe races, and scenes showing ships that have crashed into the Second Narrows Bridge. The third slide show, on July 11th, will show pictures of the Dollar Mill, built by Robert Dollar as pan of his lumber empire. It will include pictures of millworkers, buildings and equipment comprising the community from which we inherited the name'Dollarton.' On September 12th, i photographs of the Granite Quarries, which stood near the Deep Cove Marina, will be featured. (Frequenters of Deep Cove should be familiar with Quarry Rock, (he huge slab of granite which towers over the water at the head of the Baden Powell Trail. It makes me spot where the quarries e located.) These high-quality photos show the dining rooms, bunkhouses and system of railway lines used by the company workers.
