Klee Wyck can be rented for programs, meetings and events. At present a number of groups rent Klee Wyck on a monthly or weekly basts. These groups provide all kinds of classes; ballet, oil and watcrcolour painting, drama classes and more. In the summer, rentals are only available in the evenings as there is a drama camp running all day. What is Klee Wyck.' Named after Emily Carr (Klee Wyck. or The Laughing One. was a nickname given her by the Ucluelet Indians!, it is a home situated on a beautiful parcel of land along the banks of the Capilano River. The building was left to the District of West Vancouver to be used for community and cultural groups. Advanced Arts Study Awards The Vancouver Foundation recently announced that the Board of Directors has approved $70,000 for the continuance of the Advanced Arts Study Award program. The program was initiated to assist performing arts students who wish to pursue their studies toward a career in either music, dance, or theatre. Awards range from S3000-$5000. V8W 2AI: call 381-2443; or fa* 3BI-4419. 5th Annual Canadian National Playwriting Competition Theatre B.C., celebrating its 60th anniversary as the parent association for community theatre in B.C., rccendy announced details of the fifth edition of its Annual Canadian National Playwriting Resident Canadian professional and nonprofessional playwrights are invited to enter original, unproduced stage-plays in either French or English for the FullLength and One-Act categories. Plays of culturally diverse origin are eligible and encouraged but are acceptable only if submitted in either official language. New plays having received a workshop or reading without a full public production are eligible but must be so noted. Musicals cannot be fairly adjudicated and therefore Folkfest Craft Fair Jurying Artisans wishing to take pan in the June 17-26 outdoor Craft Fair should call the North Vancouver Community Arts Council at 988-6844 for an application form. Jurying dates are May 19, May 26 and June 2, from 4-6 p.m. in the Theatre Lobby of Presentation House. Calling All Artists to Harmony Fest This summer West Vancouver will once again come alive with music and visual arts during the week of August 9-15th. The Harmony Arts Festival is a North Shore celebration of culture in our lives and in The Festival is unique in that it provides a venue for local artists and does a tremendous job of showcasing emerging artists alongside well-established ones. A component of Harmony, ArtBeat is the name used to denote the street gallery that features visual arts in combination with the merchant core. All window displays are installed by professional window display artists or the artists themselves, and are a strong presentation of the talent in our community. The application deadline is May 28th. Applications can be picked up at the North Shore Arts Commission, the Silk Purse, and the Ferry Building, or call 925-3605. All applicants must be current or past residents of the North Shore and Bowen Island, and the work must be current within the last two years. A third category, Special Merit, is offered to appropriately recognize a runner-up in either of the two categories or a quality script that is of a particular style or subject matter. Stage adaptations of fictional work from other media are welcome but must be so noted and will be considered for this category only. Submissions must be made under a pseudonym to focus adjudication on the merits of the material itself and to maintain the integrity of the competition. There is no limit to the number of entries by a playwright, nor anyrestrictionson subject matter. However, each play must be submitted separately and under a different pseudonym. If warranted, seven Full-Length and three One-Act finalists will be identified. The announcement of the winning playwrights and remaining finalists will be made on national CBC Radio in late June or early July. Cash awards will be given for each category: $1500 Full-Length. $1000 OneAct and $750 Special Merit Each finalist will receive a written critique compiled Jazz Night Promises to Raise the Roof "All that Jazz" is the theme for a night of New Orleans-style fun at the West Vancouver Seniors' Centre, May 9th. from 6-11 pm. Open to all Lower Mainland residents, drinks to a jazz trio in the social lounge will be followed by dinner and dancing to Lance Harrison's legendary quartet. Dinner is generously provided by the Bread Garden in Park Royal. Tickets are $20; all proceeds go toward the "Raise the Roof fundraising drive to finance the expansion of the Centre.
