th e a t r e Promised Land spans Cultural Boundaries A Play Within a Play (Within a Play) by Gail Trainer "The actor, says Camus, is one who must lose himself in order to find himself..the aelor has made a choice, the choice that every serious artist must make, to continue his investigation into truth, his exploration in the dark, no matter what the consequences or where it might lead him, lo use up every ounce of possibility in his brief time on siage. to play his action out absurdly to the end." Deep Cove Stage's production. "The Curate Shakespeare As You Like It" by Don Nigro. presents a perfect opportunity to observe the actor's bizarre heroism, moments of unreasonable struggle, humiliation, beauty, integrity, triumph and salvation--and to behold the metaphor of Programm ai Ron Andrews Recreation Contro A unique theatrical event is slated tor the Centennial Theatre at the end of April. Promised Land is a collaboration between two theatre companies. Lcs Deux Mondes. from Montreal, and Tealro dcll'Angolo, from ItaJj The collaboration began almost ten years ago when the two companies met at the prestigious Festival of the Americas in Montreal. Finding that they both employed a similar theatrical approach-- workshopping with groups of different ages and social and ethnic backgrounds-- they decided to create a piece together. Given their linguistic differences, they faced a challenge in coming up with a common language of expression, but the solution soon became obvious--there would be no dialogue. Music, movement and sound would take the place of spoken language. Promised Land is a journey back in time. With poetry and humour, it tells the story of humankind as it has evolved from prehistoric to modem times. The simple lives of different characters on the same land unfold around a stone. From one century to the next, this stone is a privileged and silent witness to men, women and children who are bom. live and die on this planet. (ft tu *>«·< ^ Oi eyctyPHC 9 Art Expressions 6-9 yrs. Under the capable directorship of Elizabeth Lambert seven actors portray about 30 different characters using a mixture of Shakespearean and English text and lots of broad physical comedy. The Curate is one of the actors and the director within the play. He coaxes, cures, coddles, cares for the actors when they want to quit, when they cannot find their way in the dark. He is a tyrant and a teacher--cruel and kind, patient and relentless. He endures humiliation and indignity with them and "stands, in their lives, for Shakespeare and God" so they in turn may follow through. John Taylor is The Curate. Leah Baric (winner of last year's best actress award in the North Shore drama festival) plays die insane Rosalind. Sam Sexton is Amiens, pursuer of Cclia. who is played by Debra Drayton. Rachel Grover is Audrey. Kolsha Raven Likct is William, and Justin Clow plays the clown. "The Curate Shakespeare As You Like It" runs April 14-17 at the Deep Cove Shaw Theatre.
