front The A m Promotion Board recently embarked on an evaluation of the services it provides to the arts community on the North Shore. Its two main projects, the revitalized Arts Access magazine and TV show, have been operational for about a year now. The magazine went from a quarterly publication in 1992 to a bimonthly one in 1993. and we hope to increase its circulation to 5000 (from 3000) in the near future. The TV program has also undergone some changes. More onlocation shoots have been added to avoid a show that is simply 'talking heads." The show has a new producer and host, Jolynn Sommcrvill and Beth Easlon respectively. A number of free workshops in television production skills have been offered, in an attempt to reach out to the community and provide them with additional promotional skills as well as to give the show the required skilled volunteer base. An arts hotline has been instituted (988-ARTS) for up-to-date information on local arts The Arts Call board has been expanded to a full page--here you will find calls to visual and performing artists as well as information about arts facilities for rem. On page 4, there are tips on writing effective grant applications and media releases and on how to give a good interview. Upcoming issues will continue to offer practical advice on arts promotion. If there arc any areas you'd especially like to sec covered, please contact me with your suggestions at 984-9537. There are also a number of stories that should satisfy those with an appetite for arts advocacy. The Arts Commentary takes a look at current cultural funding cuts, and Peter Feldman has written a passionate essay about arts in education. If you feel strongly about any of these issues, you may want to join the For the Life of An rally-cum-cclebration on March 1 Ith (see page 14 for details). In any case, we welcome further essays from you on issues of arts policy. · Ann Macklem Advertising Rates 199] advertising rates ire as follows. » s l 20% discount for year-round advertising All ads are due the first of the month, on d month prior to publication: i.e. February I April 1. The television Arts Access TV Welcomes New Producer by Jolynn Sommerviil I haverecentlytaken over the role of producing the Arts Access TV show. The show is broadcast on Shaw Cable on the first Thursday of each month at 8:30 pm and isrepeatedevery Thursday evening for the duration of the month. Arts Access was created to provide an opportunity for North Shore artists to exhibit and promote their works and express their viewpoints. I must stress that this is a community program. There is no rating system at work here as there is on commercial television stations and the people who work on and contribute to the show volunteer their skills and energy. We are not driven by ratings or commercial clients but by a desire to reflect the spirit of our community. Our mandate is to encourage local artists to tell their own stories, and share their creative efforts with a television audience. My job is to facilitate this process. At present. I feel 1 am falling far short of this task because I do not hear from artists. Consequently our show often supports the mainstream theatres and galleries that may already gamer publicity from other programs and publications. I urge all artists to come forward with their ideas and to tell their stories. If you are out there working quietly in isolation, consider Arts Access your platform. Your community will thank you for it. Call me and leave a message at 984-9537. P.S.; A m Access is planning a kind of open house for all North Shore performing artists who are interested in receiving some exposure. The day-long shoot will most likely take place on a Saturday in April. Individuals and groups will be invited to the studio to perform one or two of their pieces; these will be filmed and aired on upcoming shows. Musicians, dancers, actors, clowns, storytellers, performance artists, and comedians are encouraged to turn up. For details, call 984-9537.
