Our initial revamping of the program, which took place in the spring, saw the show become a venue for lots of community arts news. However, its fast pace didn't provide much of an opportunity to cover issues or events in any depth. This month we are trying something a bit different by spending the whole halfhour focussing on the work of one artist. The Art of Storytelling In this first special, we go beyond space and time, back before electronic wizardry. Back before printing presses, books and scrolls. In fact, back before there were any communication media except "the word." And the word was spoken from person to person in an intimate, powerful and provocative way. That forum was. and still is. the story. Our special explores the an of storytelling, with the help of Roots & Wings Storytellers and (he stories and sculptures of artist Garry Thurber. Roots & Wings Abcgacl Fisher-Lang and Eric Gordon of Roots & Wings Storytellers are dedicated to breathing new life into an ancient art form. They are professional storytellers and they have spent five years spinning their yams at Lower Mainland schools and Canadian arts festivals. In this show, they talk about storytelling as the oldest art form. They explore the relationship between the listener and the teller and set the stage for artist/storyteller Garry Thurber. Myths or Atlantis Garry Thurber is an award-winning Canadian artist who won the People's Choice Award at the Showcase 1990 for Sculpture in B.C. His Dreams of Atlantis is a unique art project that combines storytelling and sculpture. For the past five years, Garry has been carving his myths of Atlantis into Brazilian steatite to create 19 spectacular "story stones." These intricately carved stones--some weighing over 400 pound*;--are now in private collections nationwide. In this special we look at the man. his art, and the story of his life.
