Councils Arts Council Elects New President The 22nd annual meeting of ihe North Vancouver Community Arts Council, which took place September 15th, elected Irwin Oostindie as President. The title of his address was "Gramineae, Cynodon, Phalaris and other Forms of Grassroots Cultural Development." Following one of the council's goals of enabling young ho artists, new president Oostindie. who is a young artist/activist, will assist the board in exploring the role of arts councils as advocates, visionaries and workers in building enabling structures for artists. Art Rental Program For two hours, once a month, over 250 original framed paintings, drawings, prints and photographs are presented to the public as an exhibition as well as for rent or sale. A l l pieces are selected by qualified jurors at twice-annual competitions. Rental costs are 2% of the artist's sale price per month, averaging S5-S6 per month. The program is in the gallery of Presentation House. 333 Chesterfield Ave., North Vancouver, and it normally takes place on the second Wednesday of the month. It is sponsored by the North Vancouver Community Arts Council. Upcoming rental dates are: October 14th,November 18th,December 9th,and January 13.from 6-8 pm. This new and unique space rental program has been developed as another small step in the Council's effort to fulfill its mandate "to increase and broaden the opportunities for West Vancouver citizens to enjoy and participate in cultural activities." Applications for Exhibit Space Rental are available at the Silk Purse. 1570 Artists are invited to enter their works for acceptance into the art rental program. Scholarships Awarded The West Vancouver Community Arts Council recently awarded scholarships to two West Vancouver high school graduates. Jason Abhyankar. a music student at West Van Senior Secondary School, and Bevil Conway, a visual arts student at Sentinel Secondary School, were each awarded $500.
