Zvani, to tour their home country of Latvia next summer. Such a tour would include the other Bait countries of Estonia and Lithuania and perhaps Russia. Finland, and Sweden. CAPILANO COLLEGE Arts for Ad Extension Programs Fall Watercolour Workshops with Kiff Holland: Still Life: October 17 & 24 Life Painting: November 14 & 21 Marine Painting: Nov. 28 & Dec. 5 They were invited to perform the opening concert of the Kclowna Philharmonic Society's Summer Festival. On June 27th. the choir rode by bus to Kelowna to rehearse and then perform at Okanagan College Theatre. The audience was warmly responsive, and the choir knew they were International Choral Kathaumixw. Kathaumixw is a Coast Salish word meaning "gathering together of different peoples." This biennial festival, which takes place in Powell River, is known around the world for its quality choirs adjudicators, organization and friendly spirit. Of the many choirs who apply to participate in Kathaumixw. only 25 are accepted. A balance is kept between youth and adult choirs. This year, choirs attended from across Canada and the United Stales. Finland, Sweden. Spain. England. Hungary . Latvia. Taiwan and Venezuela. The five-day program, held this year from June 30 to July 4. encompassed non-stop rehearsals, concerts, competitions and time to socialize with other singers. The Cap Singers were thrilled by the opportunity to sing for such a variety of people, hear performances and spend time with singers from around the world. Sharing repertoire, especially folksongs, was a benefit for the conductors. After listening to other choirs, 1 earmarked a couple of their pieces for the Singers' repertoire this year. Meanwhile, other conductors were eager for copies of the Canadian music we sang. Capilano College Singers won second prize in the Contemporary Choral Music category, singing pieces by two Vancouver composers. Jon Washburn and Howard Bashaw. In the adult solo category, Olivia Edwards placed second. Kim Tompkins was first, earning her a solo performance at the Gala Closing concert. Over 1000 choral singers were involved in the opening and closing concerts, which saw the 2000 audience seats filled to capacity. The Kelowna and Kathaumixw performances topped off a wonderful season for the Capilano College Singers. Earlier in the year, the Singers were finalists in the prestigious Chamber Choir Category of the CBC Radio Choral Compeiilion. The many other concerts and events ihe choir performed this year were successful hoih from the singers' and the audiences' viewpoints. Under the aegis of ihe Seniors' Centre inWest Vancouver, the Ambleside Orchestra will welcome amateur musicians of all ages and experiences who wish to play symphonic favorites by the likes of Bach. Mozart, Wagner. Bizet, and Prokofieff. Anita Sleeman, who earned her doctorate in music from the University of California, has agreed to conduct the group. "I hope we will enjoy making some of the world's great music come alive in West Vancouver. I know there are a large number of really who already play in one of the many chamber groups, bands or ensembles, and 1 hope to bring them together to play orchestral music." she explains.
