Arts * Councils Off the Wall AGM The business of the day having been duly attended to, and refreshments liberally partaken of, the West Vancouver Community Arts Council Annual General Meeting was capped by a highly innovative and entertaining event. After listing his credentials as curator and artists of three decades, Jim Felter - the guest speaker of the the occasion - confessed his aversion to public speaking in general and neatly side-stepped the possible tedium of a straight-forward presentation. He proposed instead - by virtue of his special status as an artist, mind you - to engage a personal fantasy and conduct the press conference that had hitherto eluded him. By entreating his audience to assume the roles of "highly respected" news media representatives, he programmed his listeners to direct the course and content of his presentation. (Clearly, a coup for a computer programmer, and worthy of applause in itself!) The serious tone of the interview was immediately established when Marius Soska, identified himself as the Archduke Franz Ferdinand, official representative of the belated AustroHungarian Empire. The conference was concluded with an insoluble query regarding art critics voiced by a representative of the Chemical Schizophrenic Artists Association of Lesser West Vancouver. In the course of the interview everything was cheerfully clarified by Mr. FelteT, from the elucidation of the identity and roles of the artist at large, to the advocacy of the persistence of windows in art galleries and how to cope with them. In general, the press conference was a resounding success, instilling in all present the overwhelming impression that an Arts Council meeting could be at once productive, informative and entertaining without stooping to the level of vulgar frivolity.
