Arts * Board North Shore Block Beautiful Awards *91. The first North Shore B l o c k Beautiful Awards '91 was a resounding success, despite a late start-off due to the wet Spring. Over seventy nominations were submitted, representing six hundred and forty-five homes. The awards programme was funded by the Municipalities and sponsored by the North Shore Gardens Committee. Final selections for the awards were made by Heinz Berger, retired Superintendent of Parks, West Vancouver; Dirk Oostindie, Superintendent of Parks, District of North V a n c o u v e r ; and G o r d o n Ramsdale, Horticulturist, City of North Vancouver. Certificates o f A c h i e v e m e n t w i l l be presented in the three separate municipal Council Chambers sometime in October. A generous grant was given to the committee by the D i s t r i c t of N o r t h Vancouver Centennial Committee. Donations were received from garden centres and North Vancouver K i w a n i s . The fourth annual Dessert A u c t i o n and Dinner hosted by V i e w , The Performing Arts Society is back. Local arts celebrities contribute their favourite desserts, which are then auctioned off. L a s t year's event featured the culinary delights of the likes of: The L a z y Gourmet's Susan Mendelson, choreographer Monique Leger, actor Allan M o r g a n , and c o o k b o o k author D i a n e C l e m e n t . Proceeds benefit the 1992 W o m e n In V i e w F e s t i v a l , an annual celebration of women in the performing arts. The evening begins with a scrumptious buffet dinner, complete with lively guests and scintillating conversation. After dinner the fun really begins. The desserts are auctioned off to the table with the highest bid -- these goodies are so decadent even individual servings hit the auction block! Hot A i r was formed i n 1980, initially for entertainment at a house party. Now it has grown to twenty members and they perform for conventions, banquets and social events.
