Arts * Visual Artist Milestone I awoke the other day with a start, realizing I was about to achieve a personal milestone. With everything that has been happening in the world - the capitalist resurgence, burning oil wells in Kuwait, Rita Johnston - I, Georgia Youngs Termaine, artist and small gallery owner, had lost touch with one of the most significant milestones in the life of a small business person; my first year anniversary. Yes, I am still able to pay the rent after one year! A year with a remarkable number of personal highs and lows. A year ago, after spending three years discovering the lay of the art land in B.C. I took the bold step of leasing a retail location in the high rent district of West Vancouver. Opening an art gallery was not that bold, even i f there was a recession. The real boldness lay in the fact that the gallery resides in B.C. Even though, in my heart and soul, I believe I have always been from beautiful British Columbia, my professional artistic life had been in Ontario. For 15 years I had been selling my art, doing commission work (primarily portraits), teaching art, and running my own galleries back east So, with only three years to regain the type of contacts and reputation I had build in Ontario, I felt opening this gallery a year ago was one of my truly brave endeavors. The first year as a gallery owner has been exciting. I am looking forward to the year ahead with keen anticipation. After four years of dedicated work in this province, I have finally developed a loyal audience for my work and I continue to be inspired by my surroundings. In fact, as a portrait artist, I have truly taken off my blinkers and discovered I could also do portraits of birds, trees, water, or rocks for that matter! B.C. has truly provided a wonderful array of portrait subjects. My landlord is also appreciative that these new portraits have found an appreciative buying audience here in my new home. But his appreciation truly falls short of mine. It appears I did make the right move. And really I should not have been surprised by this first business milestone. After all, a psychic actually told me I was to become rich and famous. I just had to figure out which body of water to cross! ·* Georgia Youngs Tremaine Owner, Georgia's Studio Gallery WEST VANCOUVER MEMORIAL LIBRARY 1950 Marine Drive West Vancouver, B.C.
