B. C. FESTIVAL OF T H E ARTS Association represent all facets of the arts: dramatic and performing arts, music, visual and speech arts, and video and film arts. Yes, there's a magic in the arts and they w i l l always make a difference to us. Therefore, it's appropriate that we celebrate and nurture our artists. A s Prince Charles said at the 1986 Festival in Prince George. "I believe we have a duty to try to develop this artistic awareness, and the B . C . Festival of the Arts is doing this." These are the ranks from which we get our professional artists. A t the grass roots level, upwards of 150,000 performers and volunteers i n every British C o l u m b i a c o m m u nity are involved. T h i s Festival brings to us "the best o f the best" - finalists (70% youth, 30% adults) from 75 regional festivals - to compete, workshop, exhibit and perform. A l o n g with them come teachers, parents, adjudicators, educators, and v o l unteers. W e expect up to 2,000 participants this year. Each year communities b i d to host the Festival and every year a different one is chosen. Each host community lends a distinct cultural theme. For example, in D u n can, the "Festival o f Legends" celebrated its native heritage. In K i m b e r l e y , the theme was " A Peak Experience." B . C . ' s greenbelt, C h i l l i w a c k . presented "The Heart o f the A r t s . " S o . given the chance, let's do it " N o r t h Shore" style. This year's event w i l l have two components. Traditional Activities of the Festival (workshops, competitions, exhibitions and public performances) will be complemented by a "Centennial C o m m u n i t y Showcase." T h i s component is designed to include local talent, facilitate community involvement, and set the stage for an annual celebration of the arts on the North Shore. Creation of a "Festival Site" (along 23rd at Lonsdale) w i l l provide a festive environment and focal point for these activities. The sireetscape and surroundings w i l l be used to promote an array o f free public performances and special events, including a " R a i n " parade and concert. Other attractions include an exciting visual arts display, community arts exhibits, music and drama performances in schools and other public arenas, a special showcasing of local talent, and a special line-up of unique arts activities in the flavor o f our community. A total immersion in the arts for five days! A schedule o f events w i l l be published by the North Shore N e w s closer to the date of the event. Tickets w i l l be available in May. One of the special touches about this event is that the winners o f the various competitions w i l l be receiving a work of art created by Drew B u r n h a m . a local artist. Volunteer participation is the backbone of this event, and the people o f the community have already begun stepping forward to show support of the Festival. For example.
