Campaign to Restore Whytecliff Park Pergola by Darrin Morrison, Director/Curator of West Vancouver Museum and David Barker Photo supplied In 1962 shortly after Whytecliff Park's popular Cliff House restaurant and dance hall burned down, Heinz Berger, West Van's Park Manager, was asked by Bob Spray, Chair of the West Vancouver Parks and Recreation commission, to design and build a "Viewpoint" and a new toilet facility in the park. One of the results was the famous pergola. Over time it fell into disrepair and was torn down. The shade and lookout that it provided disappeared. The Friends of Whytecliff Park are seeking to rebuild the pergola and are currently in a fundraising mode. The cost is estimated to be approximately $80,000. Support has been assured by the District of West Vancouver, the late Heinz Berger, the West Vancouver Historical Society and the West Vancouver Museum. Below is a portion of the support letter sent by Darrin Morrison, the Museum's Director/Curator. "At the time the structure was built in the early 1960s modernist architecture and design principles were popular due in part to the teachings and art and design practice of notable residents such as B.C. Binning. West Vancouver in particular played a central role in the development of West Coast Modernism.. .As one of the very few modernist landscape structures built, the Whytecliff pergola was a very important part of this legacy. The pergola was a highly visible and recognizable landmark for ferry passengers and boaters entering Burrard Inlet and Howe Sound. The replacement of the pergola with an historically accurate replica would be a great way to honour the many contributions Heinz Berger made to parks and neighbourhoods of this community through his innovative landscape designs." To contribute please send a cheque made out to the District of West Vancouver, and in the memo line write Whytecliffe Park Pergola Project.
