Tim Lee Exhibition at Presentation House Gallery 7 \ resentation House Gallery is pleased to present Remakes, U I Variations (1741-2049), an exhibition of new works by Vancouver artist Tim Lee. Thematically oriented around edited out all his mistakes. The result is a two-channel video showing Lee's hands on individual TV monitors. Miraculously, Lee's meticulous editing successfully creates a listenable audio rendition of Bach's 'Aria', played in this case by a pair of staccato, hiccupping hands. One of Vancouver's most energetic and accomplished young artists, Tim Lee aligns the hard-edged rhetoric of classical conceptual art with a variety of forms of popular culture, (music, sports and film), into works where the subject of social politics - particularly in aspects of race, translation and cultural diaspora - is central. A full colour catalogue, the first to document Lee's practice, will accompany the exhibition with texts by Jorg Heiser, Jens Hoffmann, Monika Szewszyk and Michael Turner the premise of remaking artworks that, likewise, are remakes themselves, the exhibition features twin bodies of work that both replicate and re-imagine seminal moments in slapstick comedy and classical music. With sources that range from Johann Sebastian Bach to Glenn Gould, and Peter Sellers to Steve Martin, Lee suggestively interpolates himself with the history of his subjects by loosely reconstructing specific works associated with their creators; and, in so doing, maps out an extended timeline that travels from the historical past to the imagined future. The exhibition will premiere an accomplished new work Lee has just completed titled Goldberg Variations, Aha, BWV 988, Johann Sebastian Bach, 1742 (Glenn Gould, 1981), 2007. The work is a self-portrait in which Lee attempts to play the opening 'Aria' of Bach's Goldberg Variations on the piano. With no prior musical training, Lee hired a piano coach to lead him through the movements, filming each of his hands at the keyboard as he attempted the difficult finger work.
