Throughout history, inversion has been recognized as an evocative, powerful, and symbolic strategy. In this topsy-turvy world, pictures have been hung wrong side up in the name of religious belief, and upturned flags have made provocative political statements. In more amusing ways, concave funhouse mirrors allow us to see ourselves upside down, disorienting our perception and making us laugh at the absurdity of our assumptions of the 'right' way up. The lens of a photographic camera, like that of a human eye, turns images upside down. This relationship has been a fundamental aspect of both the way we see, and the way the camera documents the world. In a series of photographs by Los Angeles-based artist Miles Coolidge, the artist reorients and straightens discarded, broken and crooked furniture found littering his neighborhood simply by turning the picture to suit the object rather than the horizon line. In a video self-portrait, New York artist Sue de Beer stands in front of the camera, blinking slowly and unmoving. Her face appears vague and strange, until we recognize that she has filmed herself hanging upside down, then 'righted' the image of herself. The p r o v o c a t i v e c h o i c e of l o c a l and international artists in "Been Up So Long It Looks Like Down To Me" challenge the habits with which we see the world and experience art, and asks us to consider whether the world is flipped over, or are we the ones upside down?
