Courtenay Ennis' World of Music C o u r t e n a y E n n i s has t r a v e l l e d the w o r l d , is a m a n of music a n d , "against all o d d s , " makes a living as a musician. Ennis is a composer, musician and musical director. H e is also a writer w h o tells dramatic stories through musical theatre. H e decided a long time ago, that what he wanted to do most, was write for musical theatre, with the ultimate goal of a show on Broadway. He tries to write every day. H i s current work Franklin Falls has c a u g h t the a t t e n t i o n o f Stephen S w a r t z , Grammy award winning composer, lyricist and director. W e l l k n o w n o n the V a n c o u v e r m u s i c scene, E n n i s leads a Pop band called Famous Players. Participating band members number from six to twelve on different o c c a s i o n s . A graduate of B a l m o r a l J u n i o r Secondary S c h o o l in N o r t h Vancouver, he is also a former student of jazz and classical music at Capilano College's music department. After university in Toronto, he spent many years traveling and for six years he worked on cruise ships. H i s travels taught h i m much about the w o r l d and the fragility of the natural environment. A s he grew older he became homesick for Vancouver and particularly for the N o r t h Stertz Shore. Following the dictum "write what you k n o w " he started to write about home and about his feelings for the place. The result was what he calls a "love letter" to his life in N o r t h Vancouver, the place he still calls home. This letter became the inspiration for his very original musical Franklin Falls. Franklin Falls is being produced this spring by Balmoral J u n i o r Secondary s c h o o l . They consider the debut of this production at their school as history in the making. T h e story is a b o u t a fourteen year o l d boy w h o is trying to stop a major land development project in his neighbourhood. The boy is also hoping to impress a girl he likes. Ennis wants to make people think and increase awareness about where society is going. It is important to him that his work is inspired not just for commercial gain but with a wider purpose in mind. The show challenges people to ask themselves what they need to be happy and what is really important for individuals and society. He wants to stimulate discussion and dialogue. This is the second time Ennis has collaborated with the Balmoral drama department. In 2006 he was M u s i c a l Director for their production Once On This Island. He is hoping that this very active drama programme will continue for many years to come. WHAT: Franklin Falls WHERE: Balmoral Junior Secondary 3365 Mahon Avenue.
