Capilano Student Gallery G r a d S h o w I T èjf Shelley Hamm Rae his annual exhibition features the work of Studio Art graduates and is the highlight of the year - an exhibition that celebrates the achievements of the class. The Studio A r t program is committed to excellence in art education and art making and students are exposed to both creative and critical thinking, and are encouraged to become active, responsive, responsible and participants in their society. For the show, students, in consultation with their instructors, submit work from all areas of study including: painting, printmaking, sculpture, drawing and media art- which includes: video, sound, installation, photography, performance and public art. Toni Latour, gallery coordinator at Cap College says, "We are a 2 year p r o g r a m , so many students go on to finish their degrees at other institutions. All of our graduating students whoapplied to Emily Carr to finish their degree have received early acceptance." In short, visual art is an ideal complement to our highly technological industrial society; it concerns itself with social issues, fosters creativity and satisfies spiritual needs in a materialistic society." ThisyearsgraduatingartistsareAmandaCassidy, Aileen Arduin, Mishka Heimowski, Jenna Wagner and Megan Keetley. Megan says they've all come "a long way from the summer of 2006 when we had our first group show, at the District Hall of North Vancouver." She found it to be "an amazing experience" with the faculty at Capilano. "We were all provided with great workspace, w h i c h became a second home as the group banded together. Lots of laughs, which was key in creating an environment conducive to creativity." The Opening reception featured keynote speaker Melanie O'Brian, curator of Artspeak Gallery in Vancouver whose aim is to "support the practices of emerging and established artists and writers from this region and beyond, and present new work to audiences that are increasingly receptive to contemporary art and ideas."
