A Youth Centennial Committee hasbeenplanning specific projects and events. One of these, a colourful mural on the retaining wall at Queen M a r y Elementary School, was painted during the summer of 2006. With images of the past, present and future, it captures the theme of the Centennial celebrations. As well, in the atrium of the Lonsdale Quay Market is a beautiful handcrafted tile mosaic created by five young artists for the city's 100th anniversary under the mentorship of professional mosaic artist Liz Calvin. A n o t h e r a r t i s t i c c o m p o n e n t o f the C e n t e n n i a l celebrations will be the unveiling of " A Ring of Light," a twisted loop of stainless steel by sculptor Katherine Kerr. The ceremony w i l l take place at C i v i c Plaza on June 11th. T h e o p e n i n g celebrations at M a h o n Park on M a y 13th w i l l include the launching of a new book " T h e A m b i t i o u s C i t y : A H i s t o r y o f the C i t y o f N o r t h V a n c o u v e r " by W a r r e n S o m m e r . W i t h p l e n t y o f fascinating information about principal events, issues, people and organizations that have defined our history, this book is both educational and entertaining. The C i t y of N o r t h Vancouver w i l l be in celebration mode for a month and a half w i t h official Centennial events taking place from mid M a y throughout June. The arts projects are just a few of these. The grand finale will be at Waterfront Park on July 1st, coinciding with Canada's 140th birthday. The evening concert will feature N o r t h Vancouver's o w n R o y Forbes and the ever-popular Jim Byrnes to name just a few of the great performers. After that, we begin to party for the rest of the summer, comme d'habitude.
