She describes her creative process as "almost an unconscious force" and says she can paint for hours, admitting," I lose all track of time when I am in the studio," where she is dedicated to experimenting with and improving the quality of her work, rather than the quantity of her production. McLaren works primarily in watercolour and also paints in oils and acrylics. She describes her floral works as "impressionistic realism" and is particularly inspired by the "translucent delicacies of the Iris" and the bold statement presented by the Poppy. She has exhibited her work at a number of galleries and exhibitions in New Zealand and Canada, and for the past four years she has displayed her work at her home studio and gallery in North Vancouver, which is open by appointment.
