Richard Hopkins, Program C o m m i t t e e Chair, a n d collector of m o d e r n first editions explains, "The Alcuin Society is t h e only non-profit organization in C a n a d a dedicated to t h e entire range of interests related to b o o k s a n d reading." These interests include authorship, publishing, book design a n dproduction, bookselling, book buying a n d collecting, printing, binding, p a p e r m a k i n g , calligraphy a n d illustration. Contributing artist studio, Heavenly Monkey, design books a s "objects to be experienced both intellectually a n d physically." Innovative u s e of technology from a n y e r a , a n d its skilful application a r e t h e studio's guiding principles. M o s t of their books are printed from hand-set type on d a m p e n e d h a n d m a d e paper using a Washington handpress. Editions are s m a l l -- typically n o more than 5 0 copies. They believe that "books d e s i g n e d a n dp r o d u c e d with a n e y e to h o w they will feel int h e r e a d e r ' s h a n d s m a y enjoy a r e n a i s s a n c e " in t h e digital a g e . Michelle Sproule feels that almost by magic, " a book carries w i t h it, n o t o n l y s o m e t h i n g of i t s a u t h o r b u t a l s o s o m e t h i n g o f e a c h o f i t s r e a d e r s . . . a s if, b y l o o k i n g c l o s e l y e n o u g h , y o u c a n see e v i d e n c e of a b o o k ' s influence over its last r e a d e r - s i g n s left in well w o r n c o v e r s o r s o f t e n i n g p a g e s . . . y o u d o n ' t h a v e to b e l i e v e in m a g i c t o a p p r e c i a t e this s h o w .
