4 Cates Park Concert Series and Deep Cove Daze Andrea Wiitfrréeiïem If you're looking for a place to spread your beach blanket, nibble on goodies from your picnic basket and clap along to the beat of groovy music, make sure to head over to Cates Park in Deep Cove this summer. The popular Cates Park Concert Series is on again this year (Saturdays, 4 to 7 pm, July 7 to August 18). But for a while, it looked like the annual Deep Cove festivities might not happen, Tyler Pearson, Artistic Director of Musart Cultural Society that operates the Cates Park Concert Series and Deep Cove Daze expressed relief that these musical events in which he has been involved with for the past 10 years will go ahead again this year. During a phone interview, Tyler said that federal funding cutbacks threatened to jeopardize these events but after having been pressured by many organizations who rely on this kind of financial support, the government decided to allocate $11 million to 'not for profit' organizations whose requests were at first denied. "I started the Cafes Park Concert Series In 1997 because I wanted a nice setting to expose original music and I developed Musart during that same year and used it as the operating entity for Deep Cove Daze ever since." Before reaching popular success, bands such as "Theory of Deadman" played during the concert series and Deep Cove Daze featured headlining acts such as "The Grapes of Wrath", Holly McNarland and John Mann of "Spirit of the West". Each year, the DCM (Deep Cove Music) studio, which Is owned by Pearson, produces a "Cates for the Cure" compilation CD with one track from every artist who plays the series. All manufacturing and printing costs for the two-disc package are funded by a sponsor and 100% of funds raised by selling the CD's by donation go to charity. The Cates Park Concert Series CDs have raised money for the Cancer Society and community and brings together the merchants, residents and visitors alike and attracts homei and out of musical talent to perform in front of our naturally beautiful backdrop of sea and mountains. The schedule olperformers is still being determined. Log onto wwm.musarl.com in early July lo find out which solo performer or bands will be included in this year's line-up. One of the reasons for the delay in announcing the performers is the federal cutbacks to the Summer Career Placement Program (part of the federally funded student employment program). 604-984-ARTE info@proartc.ca 440 H e n d r y Ave. N o r t h Vancouver www.proarte.ca Discover Art History this fall Choose from a wide range of Western and Non-Western art history courses, including: Introduction to Pre-Cotombian, African and Northwest Coast Art (AHIS106) Ancient M a y a n cities, Northwest Coast Native rock paintings and African fetish objects are just some of the subjects discussed in this course.
