I A Shakespeare Summer For Ian Butcher North Shore native Ian Butcher has a busy summer ahead. Much to his delight he landed two major roles with Bard on the Beach Shakespeare Festival - Oberon, the powerful King of the Fairies in the magical comedy A Midsummer Night's Dream, and Lord Angelo, a puritanical leader derailed by lust in the dark moral drama Measure for Measure. o I an's journey en route to his Bard debut has been a circuitous one. His passion for performing on stage started in West Van High's musical theatre program under the direction of Peter Vanderhorst. He eventually changed to Carson Graham High, immersing himself in music, jazz choir and acting. It was Michael Reid, his acting coach at Carson, who inspired him to become an actor. " A t that time theatre was all I was going to school for and M r . Reid really supported my passion." After graduating in 1986, Ian spent a year touring Europe, then went on to study theatre at Studio 58. This was where he first met and studied under the guidance of Kathryn Shaw who is directing Bard's Measure for Measure. Subsequently Ian appeared in Green Thumb's provincial tour of Little Sister, spent three years performing in Fringe Festivals across Canada, and helped create Pocket Theatre, a physical theatre production and student workshop he developed with Kevin Millsip for Axis M i m e . "Getting the roles of Angelo and Oberon is a dream come true and a tremendous challenge." In 1995 a beautiful British actress enticed Ian to London, England where his numerous credits include Tales From Hollywood at the D o n m a r Warehouse in London's West End, A View From the Bridge with Birmingham Rep and West Yorkshire Playhouse, As You Like It for the Observatory Garden, and Death of a Salesman for English Theatre Company in Frankfurt Germany. Karen Rae as Isabella and Ian Butcher as Angelo in Measure (or Measure Ian is glad to be back home and very excited about performing at Bard. "Getting the roles of Angelo and Oberon is a dream come true and a tremendous challenge. I love both plays and feel honoured to be to working with two great directors - Kathryn and Dean Paul Gibson. I am especially looking forward to exploring the complexity of Angelo's character."
