Flight of the Blue Heron < O co < O u I I Flight of the Blue Heron. Photo by Leighton Matthews Internationally renowned North Vancouver composer, Michael Conway Baker and choreographer Astrid Sherman have joined together to create Flight of the Heron. The ballet was commissioned by West Vancouver's long time resident Hermann F. Itzinger to celebrate the life of his companion of 43 years, the late Johan (Joop) Meuldyk. The music was inspired by the beautiful bronze heron sculpture which was a gift from Hermann and Joop to West Vancouver located at the west end of the sea w a l l . The first time M i c h a e l played the music for Hermann down on the sea wall by the heron sculpture, a blue heron landed nearby. Conway Baker and Sherman used Joop's love of the Herons to depict his life as a graceful flight over the ocean progressing from the sunrise, the joyous gliding, swooping travels of the bird, living through a frightening storm, then the death of the heron and the release of its spirit, soaring upward to exist in an even more beautiful place. The first time Michael played the music for Hermann down on the sea wall by the heron sculpture, a blue heron landed nearby.
