Brigit Connelly Silk Road Meets at the Silk Purse The Silk Purse celebrates Asian Heritage M o n t h throughout the month of M a y with visual art exhibitions, concerts, children's events, workshops, demonstrations and programs highlighting Asian culture. A n Open House on Saturday, M a y 6, 12-4 provides fun for the whole family with banraku puppetry, calligraphy, Chinese knotting, Japanese and Chinese embroidery, Chinese fan making, origami and more. The next day, there will be a sushi-making workshop starting at noon. The Festival features two exhibitions of Asian art. The first, Chigiri-e, a Japanese artform using torn paper to create collages, opened in April and continues until M a y 7. Mountain Journey, from M a y 9-21, is an exhibition watercolour landscapes on rice paper by Sixiao Feng and Irene Lam Amiraslany. Music is a big part of this festival. M o r n i n g concerts at 10:30 include Tomodacbi with V S O violinist Akira Nagai, his wife Seri on viola and other musical friends; Japanese Fairytale, featuring folksongs and arias from the opera Turnadot; piano duets by Keiko Alexander and Dorothy Uytengsu; and, Ken Hseih, assistant conductor of the V S O wraps up the morning series on M a y 30, with a blend of Asian and Western music called Mountain Harmony. Other events during the Asian Festival include a Sado-Tea Ceremony, kite and lantern making workshop, and a silk scarf making workshop in the ancient Japanese Shibori tradition.
