Editor's note Ilona Beiks. Editor I think I should change Editor's Notes, to O v e r f l o w . Each issue, after I've edited the stories, and we're in the design/ layout stage, I always have more stories, really good ones, that should be in the magazine but there's no more r o o m , or they came in after deadline. So, I've decided to use this space to tell you about things that you shouldn't miss. O n M a r c h 9 - 30, Studio2 Gallery w i l l feature the w o r k of M . A . Yewdale (1908 - 2000), w i t h a first time offering of limited edition giclees. Yewdale created prolifically from the late 1 9 5 0 s to the mid-70s. H e r compatriots were also her mentors: Jack Shadbolt, D o n Jarvis, B . C . B i n n i n g , amongst others. Some 40 years after he had encouraged her in art school, when Jack Shadbolt visited Yewdale, he was astounded. " T h i s w o r k is genius," he said. H e went on to specify that, to h i m , she had somehow managed to exemplify; "the human spirit at its most intense," and that Yewdale had achieved " m o r e in her relatively short period of painting than most artists accomplish in a lifetime." Indeed, she's been heralded as " a national treasure." H e r creations include hundreds of oil painting, line d r a w ings, water colours, coloured ink, pastels, sketches, and sculptures. She was equally adept in landscapes, abstracts, still life and portraits. But these treasures have rarely been seen. Yewdale was genuinely modest and reclusive. She didn't care if anyone ever saw her paintings - or whether anyone liked them. She never even remotely considered the possibility that anyone w o u l d want to buy a painting. Yewdale painted for herself and for the love of what she saw a r o u n d her. She distinguished her artistic integrity as being, totally, " p u r e " . . . e x i s t i n g for no other reason than to pay homage to whatever was her inspiration. Arts for art's sake. Truly.
