Creativity is carried out from the studios and on to the gallery walls, for all to see. What we don't see is the vision each gallery curator or director must have in order to focus these displays into captivating exhibitions. A l l ideas for the e x h i b i t i o n themes c o m e f r o m the c o m m u n i t y at large. E a c h one must include an interactive c o m p o n e n t such as a w o r k s h o p , artists' talk or demonstration. A d j u d i c a t i o n is twice a year, by a committee w h i c h includes t w o c o m m u n i t y artists, t w o B o a r d members and t w o staff. Feil's post secondary e d u c a t i o n i n Interior D e s i g n at F a n s h a w e C o l l e g e i n L o n d o n , O n t a r i o led her to a very successful 17 year career i n m a r k e t i n g , sales a n d m a n a g e m e n t , in the residential c o n s t r u c t i o n f i e l d . She joined the N o r t h V a n c o u v e r C o m m u n i t y A r t s C o u n c i l as E x e c u t i v e D i r e c t o r i n 1995. She has been i n s t r u m e n t a l in the c r e a t i o n o f the C i t y S c a p e C o m m u n i t y A r t Space a n d the C h r i s t i e H o u s e A r t s & H e r i t a g e C e n t r e . M o r g a n ' s path to the S e y m o u r A r t G a l l e r y t o o k her t h r o u g h a true educat i o n i n the arts. H e r grades five t h r o u g h ten were at the N a t i o n a l Ballet " mother's c h o i c e for a creative d a u g h t e r , " says S c h o o l , in T o r o n t o , M o r g a n . She a p p r e n t i c e d i n T o r o n t o , w i t h A P L Studios A d v e r t i s i n g Agenc\ a n d t o o k a few art courses at Y o r k U n i v e r s i t y before m o v i n g to V a n c o u v e r . O n the west coast M o r g a n studied S t u d i o A r t s at C a p i l a n o C o l l e g e , a n d Sculpture at E m i l y C a r r . F o r several years, she p u r s u e d a freelance career i n c o m m e r c i a l art before w o r k i n g at the N o r t h V a n c o u v e r C o m m u n i t y A r t s C o u n c i l , Ferry B u i l d i n g G a l l e r y a n d T h e A r t i s t s for K i d s T r u s t . She has been at the S e y m o u r A r t G a l l e r y for a l m o s t 3 years a n d says "I love my j o b ! " W h e n p u t t i n g together an e x h i b i t i o n , |acc|uie M o r g a n accepts proposals o n an o n - g o i n g basis a n d considers all submissions w h e n b o o k i n g the gallery's calendar. "I vary the e x h i b i t i o n s so that each s h o w is completely different f r o m the previous o n e . " M o r g a n encourages the e x h i b i t i n g artist " t o develop a theme a n d to go as far out of the b o x as they feel c o m f o r t a b l e . " She looks for " n e w a n d interesting w o r k that w i l l engage and challenge the viewer." 8 January | February
