T h i s thoughtp r o v o k i n g e x h i b i t celebrates the beauty o f icons but also l o o k s at h o w the f o r m can be used to m a k e a s o c i a l statement. C o n t r i b u t i n g artist, N o r m a n V i p o n d , w a s intially attracted to the beauty a n d serenity o f icons. H o w e v e r , he e x p l a i n s , " A n i c o n is n o t just a pretty picture. It's a story." B e g i n n i n g i n the M i d d l e A g e s , this ancient art f o r m t o l d religious stories before m u c h o f the p o p u l a t i o n c o u l d read. E g g tempera o n w o o d panel is the oldest o f the methods e m p l o y e d . G o l d leaf also features p r o m i n e n t l y in i c o n o g r a p h y . E x p e r i e n c e d artists, J o a q u i n A y a l a and C a r i d a d A y a l a , are h i g h l y a c c o m p l i s h e d painters using these techniques. T h e very precise and difficult method o f reverse glass painting, or 'hinterglas' painting, is s h o w n by Liesel Steiner Paris. E l a i n e Savoie's c o n t r o v e r s i a l paintings c o m b i n e c h i c k e n heads w i t h traditional iconography to examine subordination of animals and male hierarchy o f the C a t h o l i c C h u r c h . Today, one can argue that some people's icons may not be so saintly. A r t i s t Saul M i l l e r , w h o is also one o f N o r t h A m e r i c a ' s leading sports psychologists, suggests a different i c o n . " F o r m a n y people, there is almost a deification of the m o d e r n professional athlete." M i l l e r makes an interesting c o m m e n t a b o u t society i n his a c r y l i c o n canvas sport i c o n s . " I ' m not s a y i n g that these sports stars are gods but that people l o o k at them as if they're g o d s .
