F o r the past t w e n t y nine years, Presentation H o u s e has been p r i m a r i l y a R o a d h o u s e , p r o v i d i n g a stage for theatre c o m p a n i e s to rent a n d present their o w n p r o d u c t i o n s . T h i s year m a r k s the first time i n over ten years that Presentation H o u s e T h e a t r e w i l l be s e l f - p r o d u c i n g their season o f s h o w s -- T h i r d Street T h e a t r e Series-- i n c l u d i n g Life Skills by D a v i d K i n g , Hay Fever by N o e l C o w a r d , a n d Beaver by C l a u d i a Dey. Brenda Leadlay, M a n a g i n g D i r e c t o r since 2 0 0 3 , hopes the series w i l l help " m a k e Presentation H o u s e i n t o a professional, self-producing c o m p a n y p r o v i d i n g more opportunities for N o r t h Shore artists a n d entertainment alternatives for those w h o w o u l d o r d i n a r i l y travel across the bridge to take i n a s h o w . " Inspired by her o w n family w h o have a l w a y s put on skits a n d i m p r o m p t u performances, a n d her h i g h s c h o o l d r a m a teacher in A l b e r t a , B r e n d a L e a d l a y has t a k e n o n m o s t every role a theatre has to offer i n c l u d i n g teaching, a c t i n g , d i r e c t i n g a n d p r o d u c i n g -- n o t a b l y the C h u t z p a Festival for the N o r m a n R o t h s t e i n Theatre in V a n c o u v e r . She believes that c u l t u r e a n d theater c a n help a c o m m u n i t y to g r o w creatively a n d s h o u l d be considered "as i m p o r t a n t as healthcare, as a h e a l i n g a r t . " She is devoted to offering theater-goers a " m e a n ingful e x p e r i e n c e . " L e a d l a y ' s ardent awareness o f the n e i g h b o u r h o o d theatre concept plays a b i g part i n her management style. She has created a free Play R e a d i n g Series a n d a H i g h S c h o o l D r a m a F e s t i v a l , offers internships to C a p i l a n o C o l l e g e graduates, a n d general m e n t o r s h i p to encourage y o u n g people to get i n v o l v e d i n the arts. She also w e l c o m e s a n d w i l l c o n s i d e r local talent for a productions. T h e line-up o f s h o w s for this g r o u n d - b r e a k i n g 2 0 0 5 - 0 6 season features a v i b r a n t c o m b i n a t i o n o f comedy, style, wit, and drama: The N o r t h Vancouver M u s e u m and Archives, w h o share the b u i l d i n g w i t h Presentation H o u s e , is m o v i n g soon to their n e w h o m e i n L y n n Valley. L e a d l a y has a v i s i o n for " a true p e r f o r m i n g arts c e n t r e " o n the site-- "to be used by the c o m m u n i t y , for the c o m m u n i t y . " She w o u l d like to see the b u i l d i n g itself restored to its heritage roots to become a home to rehearsal halls, a music s t u d i o a n d a dance s t u d i o . Steering Presentation H o u s e i n its n e w d i r e c t i o n t o w a r d s e l f - p r o d u c t i o n presents a c o n s i d e r a b l e financial risk, but L e a d l a y is confident that the g r o w i n g density a n d p o p u l a t i o n , p a r t i c u l a r l y i n L o w e r L o n d s d a l e , w i l l share her passion a n d take the i n v i t a t i o n to c h e c k o u t the n e w p r o g r a m a n d s u p p o r t the theatre."
