I Art & Love: A Great < Combination By Peggy Stortz A little w e s t o f 1 ' a n d L o n s d a l e , in t h e c o u r t yard b e t w e e n the t w o n e w residential t o w e r s called the TIME Building, stands a clock p e r c h e d a t o p a cascade o f stainless steel c y l i n d e r s . A r o u n d t h e walls of t h e t o w e r s , are t w e n t y - e i g h t brass m e d a l l i o n s , each r e p r e s e n t i n g a p h a s e o f t h e m o o n . T h e s e s c u l p t u r e s are t h e w o r k o f N o r t h V a n c o u v e r artist Peter P i e r o b o n . s P i e r o b o n g r e w u p in N o r t h V a n c o u v e r b u t left in 1 9 8 0 t o p u r s u e s t u d i e s in sculptural furniture design. He a t t e n d e d the Wendell Castle School near Rochester N e w York a n d o n c o m p l e t i o n o f his courses, c o n t i n u e d living in t h e U n i t e d States. Eventually he was o f f e r e d t e a c h i n g p o s i t i o n s in Philad e l p h i a a n d later San Francisco. But after t w e n t y years in t h e U n i t e d States, P i e r o b o n w a s restless. For a w h i l e he t r a v e l e d , t r y i n g t o decide what t o d o next. D u r i n g this t i m e , he v i s i t e d t h e N o r t h Shore a n d , t h r o u g h f r i e n d s , m e t Sibeal ( p r o n o u n c e d S h i - b a l e ) F o y l e , a local p a i n t er a n d i n s t r u c t o r at K w a n t l e n C o l l e g e . O n t h e i r first d a t e , P i e r o b o n was d e l i g h t e d t h a t she n o t o n l y u n d e r s t o o d his artistic spirit, b u t also r e c o g n i z e d t h e n a m e s o f artists, living a n d d e a d , w h o m h e c o n s i d e r e d his influences. His f r i e n d s h i p w i t h Foyle w a s t h e last little p u s h he n e e d e d t o c o m e b a c k t o N o r t h Vancouver. In t i m e , P i e r o b o n a n d Foyle m a r r i e d a n d p u r c h a s e d an o l d b u i l d i n g in L o w e r L o n sdale t o h o u s e t h e i r s t u d i o s . W h i l e Peter e x p l o r e d n e w t e c h n i q u e s in f u r n i t u r e m a k i n g , Sibeal p a i n t e d h u g e canvasses in b r i g h t b o l d c o l o u r s . "Sibeal's m u c h m o r e i n t u i t i v e . She w o r k s in t h e m o m e n t . She d o e s n ' t e v e n k n o w w h e r e she's g o i n g t o g o or what's she g o i n g t o d o until she g e t s s t a r t e d . A s she g e t s i n t o t h e p a i n t i n g , it e v o l v e s . It's f a s c i n a t i n g f o r m e t o w a t c h , b u t it's s o m e t h i n g I c a n ' t really understand." Despite their different approaches t o art, t h e y have m u c h in c o m m o n . Both were influenced by their c h i l d h o o d environments. W h e n Pierobon was y o u n g , he was fascinated by t h e artwork of t h e First N a t i o n s p e o p l e , especially t h e w a y t h e y m a d e t h e i r f u n c t i o n a l o b j e c t s , like b o w l s a n d p a d d l e s , i n t o w o r k s o f art. Using this c o n c e p t , P i e r o b o n b e g a n t o carve i m a g e s like s h o r t h a n d g l y p h s , runes, musical s y m b o l s a n d e v e n h a n d signs o n t o his furniture. O f t e n the messages were dictated b y his clients, i n c l u d i n g A m e r i c a n w r i t e r S t e p h e n K i n g . Since his r e t u r n t o C a n a d a , t h e b e a u t y a n d m o t i o n of n a t u r e have b e e n i n f l u e n c i n g his d e s i g n s - a l e a p i n g s a l m o n p e r h a p s or a r a n d o m s c a t t e r i n g o f bleached logs. 14 July I A u g u s t
