From that year o n , the Festival has b e e n h o n o u r e d w i t h the participation of m e m b e r s of t h e G e o r g e family. By 1993, Chief Leonard George began participating, a n d w a s s o o n j o i n e d o n the Festival M a i n S t a g e by Children of Takaya, t h e Nation's p e r f o r m a n c e celebration of 15 y e a r s of cultural resistance. Issues s u c h as i m m i g r a t i o n , citizenship, h u m a n rights violations, police brutality, international legitimacy of laws, illegal occupations a n d the prison industry, are a m o n g s o m e o f t h e t o p i c s -- b a s e d o n t h e t h e m e o f w h a t it m e a n s t o b e "Illegal"--that t h e collective h o p e s t o address d u r i n g t h e festival in a n a t t e m p t to help strengthen the "people's" struggle against g l o b a l i z a t i o n a n d w a r . T h e 2004 d i s c i p l i n e s -- a m o v e m e n t that w o u l d set the stage f o r d e c a d e s t o c o m e . In 1 9 8 8 , a group known as t h e N o r t h Shore Youth A r t W o r k s Society e m b a r k e d o n a journey t o w a r d s their g o a l o f p r o d u c i n g cultural o p p o r t u n i t i e s f o r N o r t h S h o r e youth. It was following one civic hall protest--a response t o the unreasonable financial d e m a n d s of c o m m u n i t y usage--that the local youth group outdoor e n v i s i o n e d C a t e s Park as a v e n u e f o r the next b i g N o r t h Shore-wide s u m m e r event. Under the Volcano Festival p r o m i s e s t o b e politically a n d culturally e n l i g h t e n i n g as w e l l as e n t e r t a i n i n g . The Y o u t h A r t W o r k s Society also felt it was important to acknowledge the cultural heritage of t h e C a t e s Park site, t r a d i t i o n a l l y a Tsleil W a u t u t h Nation summer village known as Whey-ah-Wichen, and recently f o u n d t o be o n e of t h e f e w r e m a i n i n g large a r c h a e o l o g i c a l sites in the Lower M a i n l a n d . So, in 1 9 9 0 , a lone member of the Y o u t h A r t W o r k s Society approached the home of Bobby George, son of Chief D a n G e o r g e , t o invite h i m t o c o m e t o a n event that w a s being o r g a n i z e d in his territory.
