C o m m i s s i o n e d by t h e M a y o r a n d C o u n c i l o f N o r t h V a n c o u v e r , it w a s o f f i c i a l l y u n v e i l e d in 1 9 9 2 as part o f t h e A r t in Public Places P r o g r a m . Today, it is g o n e . C a p t a i n s o f t h e first N o r t h V a n c o u v e r f e r r i e s , w h i c h c r o s s e d Burrard Inlet f r o m t h e f o o t o f L o n s d a l e , d i d n o t l o o k f o r w a r d t o t h e a n n u a l f o g s e a s o n . C a p t a i n Barr, o n e o f t h e early ferry m a s t e r s n o t e d , "In t h o s e d a y s w e h a d n o radar, n o e c h o sounding machines, n o gyro compasses or any other of t h e m o d e r n aids of n a v i g a t i o n . T h e e q u i p m e n t in t h e f e r r y w h e e l h o u s e consisted of an ancient magnetic compass, a steering w h e e l , a n e n g i n e r o o m t e l e g r a p h , a n d a l a n y a r d w i t h w h i c h t o b l o w t h e s t e a m w h i s t l e a n d t h e skipper's eyes, ears, a n d nose. T h e s t e a m w h i s t l e w a s a v a l u a b l e asset a n d t h e e c h o f r o m it gave a w a r n i n g of objects a h e a d . A s traffic in V a n c o u v e r H a r b o u r i n c r e a s e d , s o m e m e t h o d h a d t o b e devised t o help t h e c a p t a i n s k e e p t o their s c h e d u l e s f o r arrivals a n d d e p a r t u r e s . They a p p e a l e d t o t h e C i t y C o u n c i l a n d Reeve Gill e n g a g e d Joe B u s t e m e n t e in t h e early 1 9 0 0 s . Joe's j o b w a s t o g o o u t o n t h e w h a r f in f o g g y d a y s a n d b l o w a t r u m p e t t o w a r n t h e c a p t a i n s of t h e a p p r o a c h t o t h e w h a r f . westvancouver W h e n scows arrived o n t h e N o r t h Shore carrying loads of lumber a n d b u i l d i n g supplies, Joe w o u l d alert p e o p l e w i t h i n d i v i d u a l i z e d t r u m p e t calls i n f o r m i n g t h e m t h a t t h e i r c a r g o h a d arrived. A o n e a r m e d m a n of C h i l e a n ancestry, Joe B u s t e m e n t e lived in a s h a c k o n t h e b e a c h at a p o i n t a b o u t Lonsdale A v e n u e . N o o n e s e e m s t o k n o w w h a t h a p p e n e d t o Joe B u s t e m e n t e , one of t h e many quiet heroes interwoven into t h e intricate fabric of our coastal heritage. However, w e d o k n o w w h a t h a p p e n e d t o t h e s c u l p t u r e c o m m e m o r a t i n g Joe's p l a c e in N o r t h V a n c o u v e r history. It h a s b e e n r e l o c a t e d t o t h e n e w w a t e r f r o n t . It w i l l n o w b e r e l o c a t e d t o t h e n e w w a t e r f r o n t w a l k w a y o n t h e Pier site at Parcel 1 3 . A f a r m o r e suitable place for M r .
