G i v e n t h a t the surface o f t h e e a r t h has b e e n c h a n g i n g f o r a f e w billion years w e s h o u l d not, perhaps, be surprised that it continues to d o so in o u r t i m e . W h a t is d i s t u r b i n g , however, is t h e loss o f a l a n d m a r k that o n e was f o n d of o r accustomed t o -1 say landmark to emphasize the idea of address issues t h a t s h o u l d b e o f g r e a t interest to Vancouverites. "No power in Venice can alter a decree." -Shak. landscapes count as having b e e n altered, a n d w h i c h , if any, c o u l d claim t o b e t w e e n t h e New and the recent be landmarks as marks o n the land. W e are d i s m a y e d by e x t r e m e l y r a p i d o r ugly c h a n g e that w e feel is not improving the earth. Then, w h e n we stop to think a b o u t it, as this exhibition forces us t o do, everything that h u m a n s have d o n e to the earth is 'altering' it, w h e t h e r it be the c o n s t r u c t i o n o f a h o m e o r setting off nuclear w e a p o n s . So, alterations may be inevitable, but t h e y are n o t all equally g o o d or b a d ; s o m e are well-intentioned u n a l t e r e d ? W h a t is t h e relation, if any, Topographies school o f have artists Vancouver done so photographers who m u c h t o establish BC as a h o t b e d o f p h o t o g r a p h i c practice?
