community I by Peggy Stortz Symposium 2004 The cafeteria at the William Lucas Centre was already demonstrations by RNB Dance a n d Theatre Arts, the Eagle S o n g Dancers, a n d O n e D a n c e Creative Arts C e n t r e . T h e g y m was also the v e n u e for demonstrations in website design, y o g a , life d r a w i n g , b o o k b i n d i n g a n d other visual arts techniques. Various societies, associations, schools a n d festivals set u p i n f o r m a t i o n tables as well. b u z z i n g w h e n I arrived early Saturday m o r n i n g . It was a buzz o f anticipation. T h e tables w e r e all full so I settled d o w n into o n e o f the comfy chairs at t h e back o f the hall a n d w a t c h e d . A f t e r a f e w w o r d s f r o m Hilda C o l w e l l , t h e present chair o f t h e Arts & Culture Commission of North Vancouver, w e all dispersed t o our various destinations. Besides the brand n e w "Live at the S y m p o s i u m " demonstrations, By lunchtime, the energy in t h e cafeteria had escalated. this year saw the first ever w o r k s h o p s f o r y o u t h . I a t t e n d e d o n e o n improvisation f o r c h i l d r e n f r o m 10-12 years o l d a n d h a d a w o n d e r f u l time. Later o n , I noticed these y o u n g p e o p l e exploring t h e d i f f e r e n t b o o t h s a n d w a t c h i n g t h e d e m o n s t r a t i o n s . Including o u r b u d d i n g artists is certainly a terrific innovation. Enthusiasm a n d e x c i t e m e n t was e v i d e n t at every t a b l e as t h e participants shared their morning's experiences b e t w e e n bites of t h e delicious lunch p r o v i d e d by T o m m y ' s C a t e r i n g .
