To c o m m e m o r a t e t h e 10th anniversary o f t h e D e e p Cove Cultural C e n t r e a n d c e l e b r a t e t h e p i o n e e r s a n d spirit of the t o w n , volunteer executives o f t h e D e e p C o v e Heritage Society -- Janet Pavlic, M a r y J o h n s o n a n d Pat Morrice--initiated the creation of a heritage g a r d e n . "It's really b e e n a labour of love," says Heritage Society vice President M a r y Johnson. " W e wanted t o m a k e s o m e t h i n g lasting f o r o u r c o m m u n i t y . " A l m o s t e v e r y o n e involved has v o l u n t e e r e d time, resources and f u n d i n g t o m a k e t h e g a r d e n grow. Early plans evolved with the help of Trevor Holgate a n d Hazel Baxter of t h e District of North V a n c o u v e r ' s C o m m u n i t y P l a n n i n g d e p a r t m e n t t o plan and beautify the space c h o s e n f o r t h e g a r d e n : t h e west side of the D e e p C o v e Cultural C e n t r e outside t h e H e r i t a g e Society office. First t h e Cultural Centre g o t a makeover, b e g i n n i n g with a paint j o b in soft yellow a n d sage tones. T h e n landscape Architect Ron Myers d r e w u p a preliminary plan for the g a r d e n , envisioned as a picturesque h a v e n a l o n g the slope of Gallant A v e n u e .
