Exit 22 Productions (Capilano College's theatre department), wanted to bring a version of Beauty and the Beast to the Cap Theatre Series for 2003 and so Des studied several versions and was quickly taken by Mr. Brill's version. The story dates back to as early as 1756 and since the 18th century, many have tried their hand at updating the fairy tale, whether as a story, a play or a poem. Des Price was asked why he chose to direct this unique and dramatic version, and he said with a smile, "It's an imaginative, re-telling of the classic fairy tale that makes clever use of verse. Many of the versions seemed to be aimed toward the pre-school audience but The Masque One of the most intriguing and interesting versions is The Masque Of Beauty And The Beast, written by the award winning playwright, Mr. Michael Elliot Brill in 1975. He is an award winning playwright, actor, and director specializing in the area of Children's Theatre. He was the writer/director of 39 half-hour episodes of the nationally and internationally syndicated sitcom/variety show, The Fabulous Follies. His most recent work is The Cat that Sang for His Supper, a novel. The play will be produced entirely by the students and faculty of the Capilano College Theatre Department, Exit 22 Productions. There are 6 principal parts: Beauty, the Beast, Beauty's Father, Beauty's 2 sisters and the Bank Merchant. Narration will be by a Chorus of 4 females He is a gifted producer and his suggestions will most definitely interest the most advanced directors, such as Des Price from the Capilano and 4 males. The chorus' costumes and masks will be themed around that of the Commedia Delle Arte, very renaissance and medieval. The beauty will be displayed in all the satin, velvet, lace and ribbon that the costume designer, Kim Bothen, can add to her feminine, graceful and elegant gown. The cast will be costumed and masked according to character and the set designer, Dave Winstanley will carefully and creatively provide the atmosphere required to best represent each act in the play. Lighting design arranged by Michael Scriven (graduate of Cap's Theatre Program), will aid in bringing mood and emotion to the play.
