The book had good reviews and was, surprisingly, on the San bestseller list in 1945. Francisco Chronicle Adams's anger still showed in 1965 when he offered the collection to the Library of Congress. "The purpose of my work was to show how these people, suffering under a great injustice, and loss of property, businesses and professions, had overcome the sense of defeat and despair by building for themselves a vital community in an arid (but magnificent) environment... All in all, I think this Manzanar Collection (209 photographs) is an important historical document, and I trust it can be put to good use." The Library of Congress has collected these images under the title Suffering Under a Great Injustice. The Manzanar Camp was, somewhat ironically, just east of the Sierra Nevada Mountains where Adams spent so much of his photographic career. In the Manzanar photographs the Sierras, a modern symbol of freedom from the travails of urban life, appear as a distant backdrop to these images of incarceration.
