love t o talk about t h e l o t of the immigrant - "It was not my intent to come here/ but my path has led me here/ my soul lies hidden by the dust of my long journey/ but I have been trying to shake it off/ In my travels I have become a martyr of sorts/ and for my sacrifice I deserve some respect" These lines could speak for a thousand artists from a hundred cultures. In Beyond Boundaries, Kiran Ahluwalia pays tribute to the journey of these poets and offers their works up to an audience of Canadians which numbers in the tens of thousands. Kiran functions on many levels. First and foremost she is an artist and one who has transcended the boundaries often imposed on artists from outside the mainstream. Her schedule last summer gives an indication of the breadth of her developing career- Ottawa Blues Festival, Folk on the Rocks in Yellowknife, Atlantic Jazz Festival in Halifax, a classical music festival at Quebec's Mont Tremblant, The Edmonton and Regina Folk Music Festivals and participation in a jazz opera at Guelph's Jazz Festival. Without watering down her art, Kiran has become one of Canada's most successful performers of world music and has done so on her own terms. She has used her skill as a singer, composer and arranger to build a performance style that has made the music of South Asia accessible to audiences w h o never imagined they would enjoy a concert of something so foreign, so far from their o w n cultural backgrounds. At the same time she remains very much a part of her community, one of its best young artists preserving and extending the traditional culture that has held her in a warm embrace since she attended her first concerts of ghazals as a child in Toronto.
