Most of the members remain in the choir for several years. During this time they may change schools or neighbourhoods, their parents may break up or older siblings may move away. The choir becomes the constant in their lives. It is a community where they experience rites of passage, share traditions and rituals, and form strong friendships that will last throughout their lives. The concerts connect the choir members with the larger musical community, which, in van Wyck's opinion, includes the audiences. "Music, to be complete, needs its listeners as well as its performers." He has left his mark on the choir and wants to give this opportunity to someone else. The new conductor, Tony Araujo has been assisting van Wyck and shares his passion for music and working with children. Van Wyck is confident that Araujo will bring something new and exciting to the choir. In the meantime, van Wyck wants to work more with orchestras and longer more intricate pieces of music. He hopes to join up with an existing orchestra or form one of his own. For the past few years, he has assembled a group of musicians of like spirit for two annual concerts. To prepare himself for this work, he has been shadowing other conductors and attending conducting workshops. Van Wyck himself facilitates seminars and workshops for choir directors. Van Wyck will continue to teach at VCC and work at the West Vancouver United Church where he conducts not only the church choir, but also a larger community group called the Pacific Spirit Choir, an extension of the original choir. Ultimately he would love to combine his passion for voices and orchestral music and work in the realm of opera. "I like living dangerously. I like the risk that's always inherent in opera."
