His work features unusual design, exquisitely detailed cabinetry, and stains to bring out the grain of the many types of woods he uses. Often the structure of the piece is brought forward by the use of different kinds of wood for different components producing beautiful abstract designs. Judson Beaumont creates brightly painted wooden furniture in his large studio in Vancouver. His work has a curvy melted plastic look that is reminiscent of cartoons or psychedelia. Its fun. Izabela Oereb makes brightly painted wooden furniture often using recycled wood. Similar in many respects to Beaumont's work, Gereb is edgier, sexy in a campy urban girl cigarettes-and-high-heels kind of way. Ross MacMillan creates unusual furniture made from recycled wooden molding patterns from an old foundry and machine shop. In MacMillan's work, the wood seems to be like metal, because, in fact, it was used to make things of metal. The finished pieces are a juxtaposition of forms from many different sources, from ships to bridges, from pulp mills to streetcars. Finished either with stains to allow the natural wood to show through or muted colours, the surface has the qualities of fine antiques. This of course contrasts in a humourous way with the seeming heavy metallic industrialness of the forms. Dawn Marsden and Kirkley/Carswell information unavailable at print time.
