art matters | One of the great student activities this summer is the PINNACLE Summer Strings & Orchestra Experience from July 14- 31. The first two weeks will be sessions in Strings, Chamber Music, small group lessons, chamber music opportunities, master classes for strings, composition instruction with computers and an optional Celtic music group lesson; all taking place at Carson Graham Secondary School. The second dynamic program will be a full orchestra with well known Ambassador of Music, and Composition from July 14th -18th and July 21st -25th.These will be afternoon sessions of Pinnacle Strings & Orchestra Experience Clyde Mitchell. This will be an experience of symphonic literature with strings, winds, brass, and percussion instruments. Included will be sectional coaching, possible small group technique sessions and full rehearsals all taking place at the great facilities and theatre of Capilano College. The daily schedule is 9 am -3 pm with a kickoff pizza party-meet the faculty on Sunday evening July 27 and a performance on Thursday evening, July 31. Participants will be at an intermediate to advanced level (from age 12-18) with good music reading skills. The excellent faculty includes: Clyde Mitchell, conductor of Sinfonia; Dr. Frederick A. Schipizky for Composition and String Bass; VSO violinist Carolyn Cole; teacher and violinist Lindsay Mellor; Heather Hay, well know cellist; and Claude Giguere of North Shore Celtic Ensemble. North Young North Van Duo in Artropolis Selected from over 450 entries representing an intriguing variety of media and disciplines from across British Columbia, local artists Danna Vajda and Willie Brisco participated in the huge S f f ARTA/CW Artropolis exhibit at theCBC buildings in June. Vajda and Brisco recently graduated from Capilano College and at ages 19 and 21 respectively, were the two youngest artists in the show. Vajda, winner of the 2001 Gordon Smith Award, is currently traveling/researching through South America. Brisco was one of 17 artists whose works were published in the Artropolis educational pamphlet given to schools.
