literary arts | Maureen Curtis SHAKESPEARE FESTIVAL hours later reality hit and Cross was horrified at what she had done. "You sounded just like a character in your book," said the unfazed publisher of Beachholm when she apologized. Cross' book, The Footstop Cafe, will be published in 2005. It is about a woman who has "issues" with the common conception of what the perfect mother is when she not only gets pregnant but decides to pursue her career by opening a sex shop. Cross was heavily pregnant and wearing a fuzzy Tickle Me Elmo shirt when she ventured downtown to research a sex shop. The staff did not believe her when she said she was looking for information for a book. "They kept saying ' Tell what you're really looking for?' and putting strange objects in my hands," she remembers. Cross's describes her book as comical and saucy," a departure from her seven unpublished works of science fiction/fantasy. She puts this change down to the fluctuation of her hormones during pregnancy which caused her to feel more than usually frisky. Cross grew up on the North Shore where she made her first early attempts at writing. She was reluctant to have children of her own, partly because she worried it would take time away from writing. She is n o w the mother of two beloved human beings - one of whom shares the room where Cross writes. It is sweetly ironic that her story about a woman dealing with the conflicting pulls between personal ambition and devotion to family, should be her first novel to be published.
