He attended York University from 1972 to 1976, majoring in visual art. His photography was initially an extension of his human rights work, but rapidly became the way that he spends much of each year, returning to his Ontario farm when not 'in the field'. Something other than university study prepared him to make photographs in El Salvador that required him to "climb(ed) onto the roof (of the bus), lying flat at two army checkpoints among baskets of bananas and live hens. The soldiers entered the bus but took no one off. It was my third entrance into the zone." Towell worked and lived in El Salvador over a ten-year period 1986 to 1995 during which 75,000 Salvadorans lost their lives in "the dirty war". His photographs in the exhibition at Presentation House Gallery include Central America, the Middle East and Mennonite communities in Canada and Mexico.
