That w a s m y p o s i t i o n a b o u t a year a g o w h e n Presentation House Gallery (PHG) learned of a t o u r i n g e x h i b i t i o n f r o m t h e N a t i o n a l G a l l e r y of C a n a d a of T o w e l l ' s photographs from 1985 to 2000. I k n e w that the National Gallery w o u l d n ' t be circulating a n e x h i b i t i o n by s o m e u n k n o w n photographer, so I a s s u m e d I w a s t h e o n e w h o w a s a bit out o f t h e loop. A s it turned out, I w a s very much in the dark about one of Canada's national treasures: a p h o t o g r a p h e r w h o successfully m a k e s t h e v i e w e r feel w h a t it w a s like t o b e in his shoes. Even t h o u g h I h a v e n ' t s e e n his b u s i n e s s c a r d yet, I h a v e read that Larry Towell's card says ' H u m a n B e i n g ' in the place where ' o c c u p a t i o n ' is n o r m a l l y f o u n d . The s a m e article says that Towell is " o n e of those rare p h o t o j o u r n a l i s t s w h o , like R o b e r t D o i s n e a u , travels r e l u c t a n t l y a n d only w h e n the subject is very important to h i m . " For a reluctant traveler, Towell seems t o d o a lot of t r a v e l i n g , over t h e past d e c a d e m u c h of it to a n d in the M i d d l e East.
