Following in the successful w a k e of it's i n a u g u r a l year last June, North Vancouver's satellite festival Shore Jazz, North Fererras 16 years a g o w h e n it d e b u t e d at the V a n c o u v e East Cultural Centre in M a r c h 1 9 8 6 . T h r o u g h o u t its history, Drum Heat has been a focal point of t h e p e r c u s s i o n arts in V a n c o u v e r presenting the w i d e s t s p e c t r u m of d r u m m i n g a n d m a l l e t k e y b o a r d artists f r o m across the country a n d b e y o n d . "The idea c a m e partially from W e n d y N e w m a n , " says founder Sal Fererras, " w h o h a d seen me play at the C u l t c h in so in p a r t n e r s h i p w i t h t h e Vancouver I n t e r n a t i o n a l Jazz Festival (VIJF), returns w i t h a n o t h e r diverse a n d eclectic p r o g r a m ; truly offering something for everyone's musical tastes. The VIJF is Vancouver's most successful music festival, attracting close to a m i l l i o n jazz fans annually. M a n y of these hail from our shores as N o r t h V a n c o u v e r has p r o v e n t o be a h a v e n for jazz enthusiasts. The m a n y different g r o u p s that she a s k e d me to put s o m e t h i n g together t h a t b r o u g h t a l l t h o s e styles t o g e t h e r . I d e v e l o p e d t h e i d e a s as a s h o w c a s e for p e r c u s s i o n i s t s to s h o w c a s e t h e i r m o s t o r i g i n a l a n d innovative concepts as w e l l as to present traditional music that lacked greater e x p o s u r e . From all accounts, year o n e of North Shore Jazz w a s a success - and year t w o is destined to be an even greater success. M a n y of the performances are characterized by bringing artists together: whether it is young emerging artists performing w i t h established guest artists, or veteran local players p e r f o r m i n g w i t h i n t e r n a t i o n a l guests, the c o l l a b o r a t i v e t h e m e pervades a n d creates truly unique, inspiring, one-of-a-kind events.
