In his series On Monuments these ( 2 0 0 0 ) , M a n u e l Pina p h o t o g r a p h e d n o w e m p t y spaces t o c o m m e n t on ideology, t h e o b l i t e r a t i o n of t h e past, a n d , consequently, h o w w e u n d e r s t a n d histories. Both p h o t o g r a p h e r s look a t historical c o n d i t i o n s that reconfigure our perceptions of the p r e s e n t s t r u c t u r e o f t h e s e t w o key cities, a n d in so d o i n g p o r t r a y a l a n d s c a p e of absence as w e l l as resilient presence. The i m a g e s c o n s t r u c t n a r r a t i v e s t h a t reveal broader cultural, social, and political m e a n i n g s . The u r b a n e n v i r o n m e n t becomes a m a p and a metaphor for revolutionary ideals and ideas. These are revealed as much w i t h i n t h e s h a t t e r i n g of i d e n t i t i e s as in t h e construction of t h e m , leaving, in t h e case of Haraldsson's Paris, an organic w h o l e in place of a M o d e r n i s t d r e a m , and in Pina's Havana, a series of post-Revolution sites w h o s e use is ' t o be d e t e r m i n e d ' .
