Artm a t t e r s The Business of Art always on the lookout for new artists for her growing business - Art-Tistic. There is an old saying that the best artists are the worst businesspeople, and vice versa. Miriam Aroeste is the exception to that rule. The North Shore clay sculptor has developed a sterling reputation as an artist, and is now marketing other artists as well as herself to corporations, companies and collectors throughout the Lower Mainland and elsewhere. And she is "I love people and am comfortable marketing good art," says Aroeste. "I like to be on the spot, the cocktail parties, openings. I love that, but then there are times when I want to go to my studio and I don't want to see anyone for hours." With her studio at the infamous old warehouse at 1000 Parker in Vancouver, which has been turned into a rabbit warren of smaller spaces housing an astounding variety of artists, Aroeste began promoting herself and then her father, an internationally acclaimed bronze sculptor who is based in Mexico City. Things went so well she started to take on a few more artists, including the North Shore's Angelica Montero, who does "mainly landscapes with amazing technique and color in oil on canvas," and Sharalee Regher, who works in watercolor and mixed media. Aroeste's own work is conceptual more than figurative, and she is getting more into wall pieces and installations, including architectural pieces that occasionally take up a whole wall. "There is more and more art in office buildings, and people seem to want original works now more than prints," she said. "There are also interior designers and collectors. Everybody needs art, and I am seeing it more in hotels, bars, clubs and restaurants. It's fabulous." Aroeste can be contacted on her cell phone at 604.716.8485, or by e-mail at miriam@art-tistic.com.
