Summer by read Peggy Shortz For many, summer is the time to relax and get lost in a great book. To that end, I wandered into 32 Books in Edgemont Village and asked proprietor, Mary Trentadue, about books by North Shore writers or on North Shore themes. She had a few great suggestions. Penelope's Way by Blanche Howard is set here in North Vancouver. A touching and sometimes quirky account of one woman's response to turning 70, the book is written with delightful humour and insight. The Blue Parrot revolves around the lives of the regulars at a seedy Lower Lonsdale bar. Packed with the ironies of life, it's written with incisive detail and wit. Also set in North Vancouver, Three of a Kind is three novellas about the coming of age of protagonist Jack Morrison during the 1960s. Author John Moore grew up in North Vancouver and now lives in Squamish. Calvin Wharton has written a wonderful collection of short stories, mostly set in Western Canada._7/Vee Songs By Hank Williams includes a rough and tumble cast of characters navigating along the bumpy roads of life. If poetry is what you're craving this summer, pick up David Zieroth's Crows Do Not Have Retirement and Russell Thornton's newest book, A Tunisian Notebook. Both are excellent collections. Doreen Armitage's.Burard Inlet is a well-researched account of the history of, you guessed it, Burrard Inlet. There are plenty of photographs, maps and documentation. It's a informative follow-up to her previous book, Around the Sound. A Pour of Rain tells of the early days of the Hudson's Bay Company outpost Fort Simpson (now Port Simpson). Along with her comprehensive history of the fort, author Helen Meilleur includes August 2 - 11, 2002 Celebrate Community, Celebrate Art July | August · D L U M B R O W N
