Public Art at the New Lynn Canyon Park Centre Designed as a multi-functional facility concession Giant Dragonflies Take Flight: When the new Lynn Canyon Park Centre opens in the fall, visitors will be able to enjoy much more than just a new municipal building. area, indoor/outdoor seating, ranger station, washrooms, multi-purpose room - the new building will also be home to a spectacular public art installation - as a flight of giant dragonflies soars around the vaulted interior of the 700 sq. ft. Great Room. The new artwork, entitled Dance of the Odanata, has been commissioned specifically to fit the space at the Park Centre. It is certain to make a dramatic impression. Nine dragonflies - each precision cast in porous glass, delicately coloured to replicate the markings of species indigenous to Lynn Canyon and Rice Lake, and each with a wingspan of 60-70 inches - are to be mounted against the glazing on three sides of the Great Room. Despite the bold scale of the project, the intention is to complement the outstanding beauty of the area, not to distract from it. The artist, Robert Keillor, explains: "I go to Lynn Canyon all the time, the sheer beauty of the place is a constant source of inspiration for me. How can I compete with that? What I want to do is create something that can connect residents with their community and their natural surroundings, perhaps even inspire them to look more closely at the delicate balance of our eco-system." Keillor, a resident of North Vancouver since 1995, chose the dragonfly motif for this very reason. In many different cultures around the world, the dragonfly holds a special importance, connecting people both to the earth and to the spiritual world. Over 50 species of dragonfly make their home in the Lynn Canyon area. Keillor, meanwhile, has been working with glass since he left high school in London, Ontario - as a glazier, in stained glass, even as a kiln designer. He currently owns and operates his own Glass Studios in North Vancouver. Dance of the Odanata has been commissioned as part of the District of
